My second day in Walnut Creek was a Friday. My schedule was Monday's and Friday's because I had another job on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. So when I walked in on Friday there wasn't a lot of people in the office because they were at meetings. So Megan took it as prime time to train me on my daily tasks as an intern in the office. Aside from Intertrac and Answering phone calls there was a lot of things that I wasn't aware of until Megan began to explain them to me.
She taught me how to log and store files, how to scan and copy things on the copy machine--this part seems trivial but it was actually really difficult because of the different settings, printing on letterhead, printing certificates, and knowing which direction everything goes in. Then she showed me where the mail was and where the mail key was--she then showed me how to look out for suspicious mail and what the protocol was for that. Then she showed me how to frank something in the office and what the protocol was for that (which was also really complicated), after that she showed me where things were stored and where to find the extras--which where in a closet that was a bit cramped. After going through all of that she showed me to how to check for bills and local (state assembly) representatives so I could be prepared to answer questions. When she was done training me I felt really prepared for Monday and my time with the office this summer. I knew that I didn't know everything but I knew that I could manage the office if it came to me being the only intern around. It was really excited for me to see the things that I have learned and read in my politics classes come to life before me as Megan was showing me around the office.
